LAST WORDS OF FAMOUS ATHEISTS AND SCEPTICS BEFORE DEATH; AND WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS ABOUT IT

A LIST OF WELL KNOWN AND POWERFUL INDIVIDUALS' LAST WORDS, UTTERED UPON SEEING THEIR IMPENDING DEMISE...

CESARE BORGIA (1475-1507) - Italian nobleman, politician and cardinal:

"While I lived, I provided for everything but death; now I must die, and am unprepared to die."

THOMAS HOBBS (1588-1679) - English philosopher, considered to be one of the founders of modern political philosophy:

"I say again, if I had the whole world at my disposal, I would give it to live one day. I am about to take a leap into the dark."

THOMAS PAINE (1737-1809) - English-born USAmerican political activist, philosopher, political theorist and revolutionary:

"Stay with me, for God's sake; I cannot bear to be left alone , O Lord, help me! O God, what have I done to suffer so much? What will become of me hereafter? I would give worlds if I had them, that The Age of Reason had never been published. O Lord, help me! Christ, help me! No, don't leave; stay with me! Send even a child to stay with me; for I am on the edge of hell here alone. If ever the Devil had an agent, I have been that one."

SIR THOMAS SCOTT (1535–1594) - English Member of Parliament (MP) and High Sheriff:

"Until this moment I thought there was neither a God nor a hell. Now I know and feel that there are both, and I am doomed to perdition by the just judgment of the Almighty."

FRANÇIS-MARIE AROUET VOLTAIRE (1694- 1778) - French Enlightenment writer, historian and philosopher and famous anti-Christian atheist:

"I have swallowed nothing but smoke. I have intoxicated myself with the incense that turned my head. I am abandoned by God and man.”

He said to his physician, Dr. Fochin: “I will give you half of what I am worth if you will give me six months of life."

When he was told this was not possible, he said “Then I shall die and go to hell!"

His nurse said: “For all the money in Europe I wouldn’t want to see another unbeliever die! All night long he cried for forgiveness.”

ROBERT GREEN INGERSOLL (1833-1899) - USAmerican lawyer, writer and orator during the Golden Age of Free Thought. Known for his campaigns in defence of agnosticism, he was nicknamed "The Great Agnostic".

"O God, if there be a God, save my soul, if I have a soul!"

Some say it was said this way: "Oh God, if there be a God, save my soul, if I have a soul, from hell, if there be a hell!

DAVID HUME (1711-1776) - Scottish Enlightenment philosopher, historian, economist, librarian and essayist, best known for his highly influential system of philosophical empiricism, skepticism and naturalism.

He cried loud on his death bed "I am in flames!"
It is said his desperation was a horrible scene.

NAPOLEONE DI BUONAPARTE NAPOLEON (1769 - 1821) - Famous French military and political leader, emperor of France who, like Adolf Hitler and many before him, brought death to millions to satisfy his greedy, power-mad and selfish ambitions for world conquest:

"I die before my time and my body will be given back to the earth. Such is the fate of him who has been called the great Napoleon. What an abyss between my deep misery and the eternal kingdom of Christ!”

SIR FRANCIS NEWPORT (1620 – 1708) - English soldier, courtier and Whig politician. Head of an English Atheist club. To those gathered round his deathbed, he is reported to have said:

"You need not tell me there is no God, for I know there is one, and that I am in his presence! You need not tell me there is no hell. I feel myself already slipping. Wretches, cease your idle talk about there being hope for me! I know I am lost forever! Oh, that fire! Oh, the insufferable pangs of hell! Oh, that I could lie for a thousand years upon the fire that is never quenched, to purchase the favor of God and be united to Him again. But it is a fruitless wish. Millions and millions of years will bring me no nearer the end of my torments than one poor hour. Oh, eternity, eternity forever and forever! Oh, the insufferable pangs of Hell!”

CHARLES MAXIMILIEN CHARLES IX (1550 - 1574) - French king. Urged on by his mother Catherine de' Medici, a Roman Catholic, Charles IX gave the order for the massacre of the French Huguenots, in which 15,000 souls were slaughtered in Paris alone and 100,000 in other areas of France, for no other reason than their professed love of Christ. The guilty king suffered miserably for years after that event.

He finally died, bathed in blood bursting from his veins. To his physicians, he said in his last hours:
"Asleep or awake, I see the mangled forms of the Huguenots passing before me. They drop with blood. They point at their open wounds. Oh! That I had spared at least the little infants at the bosom! What blood! I know not where I am. How will all this end? What shall I do? I am lost forever! I know it. Oh, I have done wrong."

DAVID FRIEDRICH STRAUSS (1808-1874) - German liberal Protestant theologian and writer and a leading representative of German rationalism, professing an abandonment of spiritual philosophy for the materialism of modern science.

After spending a lifetime attempting to erase the belief in God from the minds of others:
"My philosophy leaves me utterly forlorn! I feel like one caught in the merciless jaws of an automatic machine, not knowing at what time one of its great hammers may crush me!"

JOSEF VISSARIONOVICH STALIN (1878-1953) - Georgian politician, revolutionary and Soviet political leader who governed the Soviet Union.

A communist committed to the Leninist interpretation of Marxism, Stalin formalised these ideas as Marxism–Leninism while his own policies are known as Stalinism. Stalin instituted the Great Purge, period in which over a million Russians were imprisoned and at least 700,000 executed between 1934 and 1939. By 1937, he had absolute control over the party and government.

In a Newsweek interview with Svetlana Stalin, his daughter, she told of her father's death:
"My father died a difficult and terrible death. . .God grants an easy death only to the just. At what seemed the very last moment, he suddenly opened his eyes and cast a glance over everyone in the room. It was a terrible glance, insane or perhaps angry. His left hand was raised, as though he were pointing to something above and bringing down a curse on us all. The gesture was full of menace. . .the next moment he was dead."

ANTON SZANDOR LaVEY (born Howard Stanton Levey, 1930-1997) - USAmerican author, musician, and occultist, founder of the Church of Satan and the religion of Satanism. Author of the Satanic Bible and high priest of the religion dedicated to the worship of Satan.

One of his famous quotes was: “There is a beast in man that needs to be exercised, not exorcised”. His dying words were:
"Oh my, oh my, what have I done, there is something very wrong. . . there is something very wrong.”

MOHANDAS KARAMCHAND GANDHI (1869-1948) - Indian lawyer, anti-colonial nationalist and political ethicist. Gandhi is reported to have refused conversion to Christianity, stating he did not accept the theology therein or that Christ was the only son of God.

At his death, he said:
“For the first time in 50 years, I find myself in the slough of despond. All about me is darkness... I am praying for light.”

WHAT THE WORDS OF SCRIPTURE SAY ABOUT DEATH

»Where, O death, is your victory?
Where, O death, is your sting?’
The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law.
But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.»
- 1 Corinthians 15:55-57

»Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I fear no evil;
for you are with me; your rod and your staff—they comfort me.»

- Psalm 23:4

And what JESUS CHRIST said before breathing His last:
»Then Jesus, crying with a loud voice, said, ‘Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.’ Having said this, he breathed his last.»

- Luke 23:46

And what He has promised to those who believe and follow Him:

»‘Do not let your hearts be troubled.
Believe in God, believe also in me.
In my Father’s house there are many dwelling-places.
If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?
And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, so that where I am, there you may be also.
And you know the way to the place where I am going.’»
- John 14:1-4

»‘I am the resurrection and the life.
Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die.
Do you believe this?»
- John 11:25-26

»‘See, the home of God is among mortals.
He will dwell with them; they will be his peoples, and God himself will be with them; he will wipe every tear from their eyes.
Death will be no more; mourning and crying and pain will be no more, for the first things have passed away.’»
- Revelation 21:3-4

These are the last words of that well known contemporary Christian hymn: "In Christ Alone" by British musicians Keith Getty and Stuart Townend:

“No guilt in life, no fear in death,
This is the power of Christ in me;
From life's first cry to final breath.
Jesus commands my destiny
No power of hell, no scheme of man,
Can ever pluck me from His hand;
Till He returns or calls me home,
Here in the power of Christ I'll stand.”
